Did we respond to the wrong crisis?

I wrote this post in May 2020, and it’s been in the draft folders since. So, rewind to the midst of the confusion of the initial lockdowns of the so-called covid pandemic, and consider … did we respond to the wrong crisis?

You see, as of May 20, 2020, there were 744 covid deaths in  North Carolina, starting with the first on March 25.  However, based on prior year statistics, during this two-month period, there were 4,597 unborn baby deaths by abortion in North Carolina.  That’s more than five times the amount of covid deaths.

While this year’s statistics aren’t in yet, both pro-life activists and abortion providers have attested to a marked increase in abortion numbers due to the covid crisis— some saying abortion numbers have doubled.   Even if it’s been only a 20% increase — which meals 919 additional abortions — then simply the increase in abortion numbers during the covid crisis has been higher than actual covid deaths for North Carolina.

Guess what, folks?  We have a real crisis on our hands. Twice the number of children killed means twice the number of mentally and spiritually damaged mothers, experiencing pain and grief over and above the general anxiety being felt by most as we navigate the fallout of covid.

Now, let’s imagine that we had a visceral, worldwide reaction to the abortion crisis.  Here are some ways we could have responded in order to flatten the curve of abortion deaths:

Call to prayer.  Imagine if everyone from the Holy Father down to each little old lady praying in her home participated in prayer after prayer rising up to God to end the crisis of abortion in our world? Imagine if every prayer, every religious service, every effort turned to a plea to the good God to rid our world of the scourge of direct killing of unborn children? Have we treated abortion like the crisis it is?

Drop everything and focus on the crisis. What every news article, every social media post, every word from a political leader, every prayer was aimed at a solution to the crisis of abortion and how to solve the tremendous economic, emotional, social and health conditions that lead to abortion? What if every creative effort was aimed at creating a society that welcomes the gift of life?

Take the kids out of school. Schools – especially at higher grades – are a hotbed of the pro abortion mentality. The mentality of personal gain at the expense of others. The culture of promiscuity pervades the culture of our schools, places where education should be aimed at increasing in virtue, not vice. What if we closed all the schools and returned to home-based, Christian education?

Quarantining the vulnerable.  The vulnerable being those pregnant mamas who are at risk for being coerced into abortion by the child’s father, the mother’s family, or their circumstances such as baby’s sickness, parental employment problems, or general poverty or drug dependence.  What could we do to quarantine these mams? Pregnancy homes exist in small towns and large. Event Belmont Abbey College has a dorm for pregnant mothers called MiraVia. Bethany Christian Services offers “Safe Families for Children” to provide help and housing for families in crisis. The possibilities offered by the pro-life movement are simply endless.

Help with fathers’ employment.  The fathers of an unborn children needs to be empowered and supported to step forward in support of the family that he has fathered.  Providing training and employment opportunities for the father of a child — regardless of whether it is prudent for the new baby’s presence to mean the formation of a new household — allows them to bring financial and emotional stability to the mother of the child.

Donations.  Imagine if every corporation, every private individual, every effort to “round up” for good was aimed at providing practical and medical assistance for pregnant women vulnerable to abortion. Imagine if these women were being provided with free medical care, free housing, free food, and every other resource free simply from the generosity of others, apart even from governmental assistance.

Governmental assistance. What if every pregnant household was give $1200 per adult and $500 per child to help with unexpected expenses?

Now over two years from initially writing this post, we’re in a post-Roe world where the abortion providers are simply flustered that there was a pro-life victory in the SCOTUS. It hasn’t done much so far to stop abortion access, but it’s a huge step philosophically and spiritually. Thanks be to God!  Let’s respond to the abortion as the crisis it is.
